Emotional Dysregulation

What it is?

Emotional dysregulation is when feelings hit fast, hard, and feel difficult to calm—often leading to irritability, shutdown, impulsive reactions, or feeling out of control. This can overlap with trauma, ADHD, mood disorders, anxiety, and chronic stress.

Common symptoms

  • Big emotional swings
  • Irritability/rage
  • Overwhelm
  • Crying spells
  • Impulsivity
  • Shutdown/freeze
  • Sensitivity to criticism
  • Relationship conflict and feeling “too much” or “not in control” of reactions.

Well Balanced Approach

We focus on stabilization and skills-building. Treatment may include targeted medication strategies when appropriate, plus therapy-informed visits using DBT/CBT/ACT-based tools for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, boundaries, and communication. We also address sleep and nervous system drivers that make emotions harder to manage.
